You would think with all their power and money they would be some of the people that I most respected.
I don't.
I respect the guy that takes time every summer with his Dad to volunteer in the kitchen at the local church camp cleaning dishes. I also respect the guy who leads his son's scout troop to make model rockets and boats. The following folks also make the list: the guy who helps his neighbor replace his well pump, the guy who helps a colleagues family escape the worst of the flooding because the colleague is out of town, and the guy who is helping to refurbish the Catholic youth center.
Mentoring is often considered to be an active verb. Someone is purposefully sitting down with you and offering advice. But it's also passive. It's looking around you and figuring out who you want to be like and then trying to do that.
I try to be like the guys I respect.

Rich, powerful guy wants your respect. But I don't want his. It's those other guy's opinions that matter to me.
